Mild Arizona summer? Not sure what that would be. However, it seems that "winter visitors" skedaddle out of state as soon as temps begin creeping into the 80's!

I will counter with Phoenix is one small part of Arizona. There are many, many places in Arizona where summer weather is unrivaled. I have the good fortune of being able to spend my summers in a cool, forested part of AZ a mere 2.5 hours from the scorching heat of the lower deserts. When it is cold in MN, it is cold for hundreds and hundreds of miles in every direction. You can't hop in the car and drive away from it for an afternoon or even a weekend.

Really? We used to leave Chicagoland in winter where it was in the 30s, and drive 8 hours into TN where it was in the 60s. We'd spend the weekend with family and head back up Sunday afternoon. Granted MN is a bit more north and the drive would be longer, but you definitely escape the cold if you wanted to.

You're comparing our two hour drive to Flag to an 8 hour drive from IL to TN?? An 8 hour drive isn't exactly a quick getaway. That's a flight for most people.

Of course you can escape the cold from anywhere but how convenient is it when living in the northern states? As you've proven, it's a PITA compared to our short day trip of a drive. We can get a change of scenery and weather in just a couple hours. That's not the case for most places.

Yeah, right. The avg temp in Nashville in January in upper 40s, not 60, though I suppose that is relative. And 8 hours to Nashville is not comparable to less than 2 hours to Flagstaff or 4 hours to the White Mountains or even 5 hours to San Diego. There is simply no comparison in the midwest no matter how argumentative you wish to be about it. Arizona and Southern California have a unique topographic/climate mix that is not duplicated anywhere in the US. This rich diversity is one of the reasons I stay here and would not consider moving to Wisconsin to reunite with family.

The 8 hour drive was for when we would go deep into TN, but one doesnt need to go that far south to get "warmed up" (warmer than Chicago). A 4-hour drive sometimes put us in weather that was 30 degrees warmer than Chicago. Sometimes it was only a 15 degree difference, other times it was much warmer.

It seems like you're arguing for no reason. The fact is, it is much easier for us to escape the heat than it is for northern states to escape the cold. There's no question about it. We're really fortunate to have such diverse climates within a couple hours from one another. That's not true for Chicagoland or any other northern locale.

I never said the Midwest was comparable to CA or AZ, did I? If I did, could you please highlight that for me? Thanks.

I just said we could drive a few hours to escape the cold (not completely, though), which you said wasnt possible. Nothing more, nothing less.

This represents a 200 mile radius around Chicago; about a 3-4 hour drive depending on the snow covered roads/traffic. Where, even remotely close to this radius, are you going to escape the cold in winter? Maybe you know a secret that we don't.
