Phoenicians,

Got a quote from a contractor (a big flooring store) for installation of LVT (Coretec) in a 750 sq ft condo.

Total came up to 7500$, material, installation, tax and everything When I saw that number my jaw hit the now-carpeted floor, as I was hoping to spend much less even on a wood floor.

Would you say that's pretty realistic and I just need to adjust my expectations to 2015 prices?

Not really familiar with LVT/Coretec but that seems like way too much. You could get some nice hardwood flooring for considerably less. I have a client for example that advertises 5" wide hand scraped hardwood for $6.49/ sq ft including material and installation. Removal of old flooring is extra but still.

Yeah, that's what I suspected.

Any recommendations for a reliable contractor? Will be much, much, much appreciated

Almost $10/sq ft?! You could have hardwoods put in for less. I'm curious, why vinyl?

Contractor said that it's waterproof unlike hardwood, and gives it a similar wood-like look. Also easier to lay it over gypcrete.

I figured it sounds pretty good except not at 10$/sq ft

Although if I can find a better price elsewhere I'd rather go with hardwood. I live in a condo, so it probably won't add much to resale value but I'm not planning on selling it any time soon.

I went with wood-look ceramic tile and am very happy. I think I ended up paying around $4.50/sq ft installed. While vinyl has probably come a long way, the thought of them peeling would scare me away from using them. Either way, you're probably better off buying the materials on your own and then just hiring out the labor.

I'd like tile for the kitchen and bathroom and wood for living/bedroom.
Tile is nice but a bit cold for a wuss like me, he he.

On my way to floor and decor now

I bought a forclosure last year and wanted to put the vinyl that lookslike wood throught out the house, thinking I would get the look of wood withoug the expense. This material was already installed in my old house when I bought it and I was really happy with it. I thought it would be cheap to install, etc. The vinyl I chose was not even special order, it was a higher quality, but off the "roll" at Lowes.

When Lowes called and left a message on my phone that the estimate was almost $6,000, I was absolutely "floored". I called back because I was sure there was some mistake, but there was not. It has to do with how much they have to prep the floor to lay the vinyl. I just decided to live with what's in my house for now, except for a few rooms where I had to, reluctantly, replace the carpet (hate carpet). Eventually I will just install hardwood floors. That will also be pricey too because I have 1970's particle board subfloors that will have to be replaced with plywood, but it will be worth it, and much more of a return on investment than the vinyl would have been.

Yeah, I agree with that. We have carpet upstairs where the bedrooms are (except in the baths).

This is what I used: MARAZZI Montagna Saddle 6 in. x 24 in Glazed Porcelain Floor and Wall Tile (14.53 sq. ft. / case)-ULG56241P - The Home Depot
