I have a relative who wants to move somewhere in the Phx metro. She wants to live within walking distance to shopping. I tried explaining the area isn`t built for walking and unless you`re a block or two away forget it. The streets are way too long and it`s going to probably be a hike.

In other words like it or not you really need a car.

Does anyone have friends who don`t drive and walk to shopping, church ect.

There certainly are neighborhoods in Phoenix where you can walk to shopping, dining, church, etc. It just depends on where you want to live. If you want to live in one of the outlying suburbs it probably won't work very well, but if you are in one of the central areas of Phoenix, Scottsdale, Mesa, Sun City. Even some neighborhoods in N. Phx, Glendale, Peoria, Fountain Hills, will be able to provide walk ability or public transportation.

Well since pretty much every major intersection in the valley has a shopping center with a grocery store/strip mall it shouldn't be too hard.

This person is older and given the length of the blocks in the Phx metro it needs to be within two.

It might be best to contact a rental agent. I can find on Craigslist ads "close to shopping" but this generally refers to a few minutes by car.

Maybe a transportation service for seniors could fill the gap for needs that aren't within walking distance? Just a thought. There has to be other seniors in the area that don't drive that need to get around.

Great idea. I searched and you`re right. There are plenty of transportation services for senior citizens.

Sun City has the SCAT bus service that picks you up at your home and drives you anywhere in Sun City for $3. There are lots of stores, restaurants, doctors, hospitals, activities in Sun City. This is a great option for seniors.
