wondered if anyone could recommend a reasonable hotel for one night. will be driving from Palm Springs to catch a flight at 8am, so something fairly accessible to the airport, safe area, clean. All I need is a comfy bed, hot shower and decent restaurants nearby

There's a Hampton Inn north of the airport on 44th St, there are some other motels past the east end of the airport around 52nd St, some of which may actually be in Tempe. All are convenient to the airport.

I liked the Red Roof Inn in Tempe (on W. 15th Street I think) okay. The area is OK, easy drive to the airport, I think it's near a Denny's, and it's right around the corner from an Arizona Sandwich shop.
