We're making our annual visit back to Phoenix at the end of the month and will be staying in a hotel near 19th Avenue and Greenway for a few days. That's not an area I was ever particularly familiar with, and since we moved out of state nearly two years ago, I really don't have an idea of where to go to eat. And eating is pretty much one of my favorite things to do.

Preference is for ethnic eats (not Japanese) in a budget friendly place. Authentic is great, (I'm really upset that Taco Atoyac just closed before we got there!), but taste matters more. At various times in our long history and subsequent visits, we've already done Chino Bandido, Waldo's BBQ, Good Fella's, Asian Cafe, Fajita's, Filiberto's, Takamatsu, Texas Roadhouse, Greektown, Phong Dung, Alexis, Country Boys, and have no real desire to revisit any of them (except maybe Filiberto's )

Here in Raleigh, our selections for real Mexican (not Gringo Mexican or TexMex), good Vietnamese, and good spicy Thai are limited. We have those restaurants, but it's not as good as we could get in the East Valley. A wood burned, thin crust Italian style pizza is always welcome (without the interminable wait and prices of Bianco, thank you). Introduce me to a nearby, good Chinese take out (makes great leftovers in a hotel microwave), and anything else that's unique and in that NW Phoenix area.

thanks!

My favorite Thai place is in midtown - The Wild Thaiger. The presentation is lovely, service is excellent, and the food is yummy. A bit loud for a date place, but I enjoy eating on the patio. Sorry it's not in NW Phoenix, but it's worth a trip!

Agree with this-- I don't get to go as often as I'd like, but it's really good, and worth the trip, especially if you are headed downtown for some other event, give it a try.

For lunch one day go have a sandwich at Romanellis Italian Deli located at 3437 W Dunlap Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85051. It is an Italian Market, Deli and Bakery and they have great sandwiches. The cannolis are great also. Here is their website and menu...

Mention of Romanelli's reminds me of another deli/market I love - Welcome to Niccoli's Italian Deli! It's on 16th St. between Bethany Home and Rose Ln. Again, not NW Phoenix.

My favorite Chinese in this area is Ming's Pagoda. It is just south of Cactus on the east side of 19th ave. You can eat in or they will deliver. We have been eating there for almost 20 years.

For Mexican there is Valle Luna at 35th ave and Bell rd and Manuel's at 11th ave and Bell rd.

We also like Chicago Gyro's on Union Hills and 7th ave or George's Famous Gyros and Pasta at 27th ave and Beardsley or for a fancier Greek restaurant try the Greek Patio at Deer Valley and 19th ave.

I went to Chicago Gyro's today after reading your post and it was great! I would definitely recommend it.

I wish there was an app where you could mark on a map the restaurants that you've had recommendations about, so that when you're out and about and hungry, or planning to be outside your usual part of the Valley, you could pull up restaurants in that area and go try them. I know I've seen all kinds of interesting recommendations on C-D and will never remember them all. I love a good gyro and other Greek food, so I need to remember this thread.

The Yelp app allows you to bookmark restaurants that you want to try and sorts them by distance from your current location. It's pretty useful.

ETA: There's a mapping function to it too. There's an app for that!
