The Snowbirds are coming, the Snowbirds are coming! (Phoenix: rental, amusement park)

This past weekend I've been noticing an excessive number of Cadillac's with gold trim packages and carriages tops, Motor coaches the length of U of Phoenix Stadium, and restaurants advertising their "early bird specials". Know what this means? Yes folks, the SNOWBIRDS have been arriving in their flocks of traveling land yachts, going 10 mph under the speed limit, to safely reach their retirement communities.

I've also been given marching orders from my own parental snowbirds to take mom's Cadillac to the dealer for an oil change, wash/wax, and anything else necessary so she can drive it when they get out here either this week or next.

Snow is starting to fall in some parts of the country so I think by the end of this month, we'll be overrun with retirees. Time to hunker down for a long winter.

And remember, the snowbirds are very good for our local economy.

They spend money on food, clothing, recreational and cultural activities, which helps our local business owners to earn a living. That also provides tax income for our local governments.

They will be renting homes, providing income to landlords; and buying vacation homes, retirement homes, and investment homes which helps our Phoenix area housing market.

In addition, they don't drive 80 miles an hour cutting in and out of traffic. They tend to be very safe drivers.

The only unwelcome part is that I can never get a morning tee-time ANYWHERE in the Valley on my days off.

Golden Corral has raised the price of their breakfast special buffet by $1 because the snowbirds are arriving.

Someone needs to teach the snowbirds how to tip properly. Sure they come and spend money, but they're also very frugal when it comes to tips and their "senior discounts".

They also need to learn how to drive properly, going 5-10 under on the freeway is much more dangerous than some guy speeding in the fast lane.

On balance, we're glad they are here. The positives to the economy outweigh any issues about how some of them drive, or lines/increased prices at certain restaurants.

The only benefit is the minor economic stimulus, and the cons outweigh the pros:

- More Traffic & Accidents (Notorious Rubberneckers)
- Longer Lines at Restaurants & Pharmacies
- Increased Viral Diseases
- Less Income + More Work for Restaurant Employees
- Increased Rental Rates

Not sure why anyone welcome such a burden to our city.

What do you expect when you get thousands of old sick people visiting for the winter? Diseases spread. Pack 100+ snowbirds into a restaurant and watch every waiter in that place get sick the next day.
