I have a neighbor asking if he could have the use of my garage, probably for several months, to stash his extra car. The extra money would be nice, but I haven't a clue as to what would be reasonable.

How much would public by-the-month garages cost? If it helps, I imagine the houses in my area would rent for $1500-$2500 a month.

Ask him how much he's willing to pay. There really is no cost to you so it's all a bonus.

Make sure he is insured properly so if there was a fire or break in you won't be on the hook. Maybe have him sign an agreement as well.

I'd 2nd on making sure you are covered/insured. Since I'm guessing this is your private home, and you're taking money, you might be now into the realm making your primary home into a part-time business so I'd tread very carefully on what you might need to cover yourself on the liability end of things if his car is damaged, stolen, a fire occurs, etc. And even if he's your best friend, or just a great guy/neighbor who you think would never come after you in an event his car is damaged, the court system is full of these nice people turning on other people when $ is involved.

Depends on what kind of car it is and if he'll let you drive it (hoping it's a super fast muscle car).

You're missing the point. Chances are he'll ask me what I'd want. Besides, if he's willing to pay $50 but I could reasonably be asking $400, why would I want to do it? There's no literal cost to me, but it's potentially a bother and something else to be on my mind.

Then say NO. I think he'll laugh in your face if you said 400. It's a car parked in a garage not a human sleeping in your bed.

I'd say flat $100 if it was me and you knew your neighbor and like them.

If it was my neighbor, and a good one at that, I'd say a couple of 6 packs would do and let it be. I may need a favor from her/him some day.
