What are some of the worst areas in Phoenix and the surrounding areas. Let me explain. Since I'm going to be visiting the area, and hopefully living there within a year, I want to drive through (emphasis on driving through) some of the...well, not so nice areas of Phoenix, and the surrounding areas.

There are a lot of parts of Phoenix that all look the same. This isn't like Detroit were there are abandon neighborhoods. Van Buren street is known for being one of the rough streets as well as buckeye. Try taking a stroll on one those near downtown.

The Maryvale area is rough and on the news all the time. Someone can tell you the boundaries or you can search on here as it's been talked about before.

The areas around Phx Sky Harbor airport are kind of scary....north of the airport and south of hwy-202 between the I-10 and hwy-143. Also the areas around the Metro center mall (Just west of I-17 between Dunlap and Peoria) are rather scary as well. There have been several shootings at that mall.

If you want scary, cruise down Buckeye Rd, Lower Buckeye, or any of the streets just south of the railroad tracks south of downtown Phoenix.

If you've spent any time in rough sections of New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Detroit etc., there really isn't any part of Phoenix that's all that scary.

Agree that Buckeye SE of downtown gets the bad hood prize and also with the comment on the residential areas north of I-10 from about I-17 west to 99th Avenue. Sure there's others, but these two areas are representative and easy to find. I don't find anyplace here very "scary" though - just poor and rundown. I lived, worked and spent time in the rough parts of Phoenix for years without incident.
