Thanks for pointing out that Johnny's has Chicago beef sandwiches (though without the giardinaria, I'm not sure it's a 'proper' Chicago beef sandwich. We'll try it with the hot peppers, I guess.)

We can agree to disagree above Portillos.

Skip Napoli's.

This just brought back a bad memory. I was thinking I hadn't really had pizza since moving here but did get carry out from that place about 2 years ago. One of the worst pizzas I have ever had.

90% of the meals that I have eaten in Phoenix this year have been the small restaurants located in the Mekong Plaza in Tempe. I am not sure about whether that fits in the OP's geographic preference.

That is actually Mesa. Not to be nitpicky, but just in case anyone is looking for this in Tempe.

There are some really good restaurants there!

Anywho, every winter we come back to Phoenix for about ten days. Half the time is spent in the NW (specifically near 19th Ave and T-Bird) and the other half in Gold Canyon. While in GC, we hit some restaurants in the EV. During these trips we NEVER bother going downtown or to downtown Scottsdale or other areas except the NW and EV.

Looking for recommendations for restaurants in the NW or EV areas only. Preferably budget friendly. I know and have visited many of the old favorites, but I'm looking for those that are new or still remarkably good for the price. I don't care about atmosphere. I'm interested in good food, particularly Asian (not sushi), Mexican, pizza, or unusual ethnic.
We love True Foods at Scottsdale Quarter up near the Scottsdale Airpark on SD road. Lovely food, great servers, and open seating at the bar or you can get a table or share a community table.
