There's plenty of land to expand it for 50 years and eventually when Sky Harbor gets old, close it down and demolish it for infill to DT Phoenix.

If that ever happened, let's hope they design the place to be more user friendly and less confusing for those trying to pick up or drop off passengers. I hate Sky Harbor, at least from the outside.

The City of Phoenix is not going to allow Sky Harbor to close. Sky Harbor is not like Stapleton. There really isn't room for an airport of Sky Harbor's size anywhere in the existing city limits except maybe sections of far, far North Phoenix.

There are big growth plans for Mesa/Gateway Airport and expansion will take place there over the next 30 years to alleviate any possibility for excess crowding at Sky Harbor. That's why they are slowly building SR24 to accommodate traffic for a future east terminal on the eastside of Gateway. I actually think Sky Harbor is a great airport and it's so much easier to get to from most parts of the valley, as opposed to say, driving 45 minutes into the middle of nowhere like you have to at Denver International Airport. I find pickup and dropoff easy, as well, and the security lines are much shorter than at most other major city airports.

We don't have a reason to build another secret underground base here like they did for DIA. So no reason to waste the billions we have and are currently investing into PHX to build another airport in the middle of nowhere.

Honestly, cities generally don't need more than one or two major airports - two is pushing it, unless you're in Los Angeles. Gateway has a ton of expansion plans and could potentially accommodate many, many travelers.

Beyond that, Buckeye's airport has been trying to gain momentum for years, and if Buckeye should ever grow into its size (and the west valley as a whole)- it would be an important airport location, indeed.

as suggested in the most recent posts here, a third commercial airport for the Phoenix area seems very far off, especially considering Sky Harbor's plan to expand in the area of current Terminal 2 and Gateway's nearly-unlimited expansion potential....

Phoenix metro is #12 in the nation in terms of MSA population....

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...tistical_Areas

BUT.....note that #1, NYC metro, has, arguably, five commercial airports...#2 AND #13, combined, form the metro LA area and it also has five commercial airports.....SF/SJ/Oakland MSA, #11, has three commercial airports

You guys are aware that Davis-Monthan, a much larger Air Force Base than Luke, sits arguably six miles away from the Tucson airport? They are separated by some buildings and the I-10.

When I lived further out West in Surprise I was under the jets I heard them often growing up however it would really depend on the flight patterns of Luke to see if Glendale would be a viable option.

Personally though I would agree Goodyear would be a good third option. Further removed from Luke (which is a good thing for those souls who live near there, a lot less planes to hear) and it's closer to the freeways of the West Valley which make it more convenient. However I also like the Deer Valley airport, but I don't know if that's as good of an option compared to Goodyear.
