I keep hearing them talk about the "stack" on the news when talking about the traffic in the morning. What and where is this "stack?"

Well, to me the stack is the freeway interchange between I10 & I17 near McDowell & 27th Ave. In reality there are several "stacks" around the valley now. The media should be precise instead of just saying the stack they should tell you the interchange.

From Wikipedia...

"The Stack is a colloquialism used to describe the symmetrical, four-level stack interchange in Downtown Phoenix in the U.S. state of Arizona that facilitates movements between Interstate 17/U.S. Route 60 and Interstate 10.[1]"

I define the stack as the second most congested freeway interchange in the valley.

Maybe I'm wrong but I think the mini-stack where I-10, 202 Loop, and SR 51 connect has got to be the worst.

When traffic reports reference the "stack", the reference is to the interchange of the 17 and the 10. The mini stack is the 10-51-202 interchange.

But locolobo13 is correct; there are numerous stacks around the valley.

Judging only from the amount of paint on the walls of the different ramps, I agree.

At one time it was the largest interchange by volume of cars per day. It still might be the largest but I don't know.

Totally agree that the media should be more precise; and that applies to radio as well as television. Between snowbirds, people who are new to Phoenix, or people on the highway just passing through, there are going to be many people in Phoenix who have no idea what the 'stack' is...especially since, as others have pointed out, there's more than one stack.

At the time they named it that, there was only one. Now, they need more precise names.
