I am having a new bathtub put in and the plumber is fairly certain he can preserve all but one line of the tile in my shower, I had a tile company come by today and quote me $1100 to retile the one line it's about 8-9 feet by 1 foot, standard size tub, or $2600 for an all new shower tile. The 1100 also include putting in some corner shelves, does this price seem average? I have roommates and want to get it done as soon as possible but don't want to over pay of course. Thanks as always to anyone who replies.

If money is tight you can surely find someone on Craiglist to do it for less, if you want to stick with reputable contractors it can't hurt to call around and see if anyone wants to undercut the offer or not. A few phone calls should give you the info you need on whether it's a fair price or not, I am guessing.

I do know this, when I had a pipe in my kitchen dug up and repaired, the contractors who fixed it also did the re-tiling for me. However, mine were 12x12 tiles so it wasn't a big job -- the smaller the tile the more work it is and the more it will cost.

It may be that a plumbing-only company won't mess with the tile whereas a more all-around contracting company might be able to do both. Or maybe it just varies from company to company. So for convenience sake you might consider that.
