Dang Ponderosa, you beat me to it! The rains usually start 2 weeks after the cicadas make an appearance.
We'll probably start hearing the cicadas this weekend or early next week, which would make first rains over the 4th of July weekend. Shall we start a pool? I'll take the bets!

Yep, I can understand the awareness factor. However, I'll continue to look at the old school method of three straight days at 55 dew points!

I don't recall a 4th of July in Phoenix that wasn't overcast or stormy. That would be a safe bet.

July 4th, 2004 and July 4th, 2005 both had clear skies and low dewpoints all day

Somewhere I read that the local species of cicadas waits until the morning low is above 80°F three days in a row before coming out of the ground. Not sure if that's true or not. It was a long time ago and I can't remember where that comes from so it's worth what you paid for it.

On channel 5, there was a Monsoon special. The weather guy explained that the Monsoon happens when the prevailing winds change from W/NW to S/SE drawing moisture/heat from Gulf Of Mexico/Gulf of California.

Awesome another weather thread from the OP Anyway Ponderosa is spot on I came to post this. The cicadas are a sign that the monsoon in eminent and we need 3 days of dewpoints over 55 to officially trigger the monsoon. This traditionally happens around the 4th of July.

I've been here since '73.
Those hot-hot temps are required to bring in the monsoon.
