Every year I get all excited for the arrival of the monsoon watching the sky, checking the dewpoints, listening for cicadas. By mid-August it can't be over soon enough. Kind of like Christmas.

If anyone is curious about monsoon "end dates"...

Using my criteria (5 consecutive days with avg dewpoint 49 or less AND 3 consecutive days with lows at Sky Harbor 74 or less):

2001=October 3rd
2002=September 28th
2003=October 3rd
2004=September 17th
2005=September 9th
2006=September 15th
2007=September 22nd
2008=October 3rd
2009=September 26th
2010=September 8th
2011=October 3rd
2012=September 30th
2013=September 21st
2014=September 26th
2015=October 23rd

Average End Date=September 23rd

All those years you have data for and only two don't have a overcast? That says a lot haha.

Actually, I forgot about 07&10, so that's 4 years out of the last 15

Anyone hearing the cicadas in the Phoenix area yet? I consider them the best way to tell when it is really coming. The bugs sure know

I heard and saw several a few weeks ago up at Toms Thumb, which is a bit higher than Phoenix, but still in the Valley. Havent heard any by me in Scottsdale yet, though.

That's still 11 out of 15 for cloudy and stormy. I arrest my case, lol.

If we all wet down our lovely rock lawns, we can get the cicadas singing and that will call in the monsoon rains.

Thought I'd revive a 2 year old thread to talk about the cicadas.

They seem to be late this year. I've heard only a few in the past week and that was early in the morning. Here's to hoping they make their full appearance this week with it hitting ~113F on Thursday!

I read somewhere that our cicadas don't come out until the min temp holds above 80 F three days in a row. IDK if that's true or not but they do like it hot.
