This thread seems to be a debate about what type of place high skilled workers want to live in, going back to the original topic. And there are things about this city and state that don't help

The California exodus isn't exactly the best and the brightest. Otherwise, why is Facebook in Palo Alto and why is Google in Mountain View, and why is Apple in Cupertino? If it was so bad, these brain machines would be in Phoenix, or Houston, or Atlanta
Sorry, I would venture to say youre wrong. Its a 50-50% mix of left and right wingers that are leaving CA. Back on the subject of CA, the "best and brightest" choose to live all over the country. CA isnt exclusive like you somehow think it is. Places like CHI, NYC, ATL and HOU attract more than their fair share of talent, and are just as desireable as CA (job wise). Ive seen several large, Fortune 500 companies up and flee CA, taking tens of thousands of jobs with them.

33 million people would naturally mean more billionaires. Those figures are sliding, and will continue to do so. Like I said, CA is the Titanic... only without the water.

Sure, but the poor and the middle class are leaving. Not a good thing when the middle class is leaving in droves. Good thing you're rich.

Yes, CA is the best at everything, we got it FirebirdCamaro1220. But a Mediterranean climate doesn't pay the rent or high cost of living in the better parts of CA.

Then again, maybe not according to all those that want out:

Roughly 5 million people left California in the last decade. See where they went | The Sacramento Bee

An unprecedented number of Californians left for other states during the last decade, according to new tax return data from the Internal Revenue Service.

About 5 million Californians left between 2004 and 2013. Roughly 3.9 million people came here from other states during that period, for a net population loss of more than 1 million people.
The trend resulted in a net loss of about $26 billion in annual income.

AZ is a big receiver of those wanting to get out of CA. Look at the charts.

Over the last few decades, millions of Californians have left the Golden State for opportunities elsewhere.

If anything, these numbers tend to underestimate the number of Californian expats because not all Californians were born in California.
And the exodus has been going on for a while now:

Cost of Living Sucks; Everyone Leaving California | NBC Bay Area

I already stated the three types of people leaving, unskilled, conservatives and working class/lower middle class who want a house instead of a condo/townhome/apartment. And California has a high COL for a reason, if no one wanted to live there anymore, it would be cheap

Given you favor democrats who are suppose to be for the poor/all forms of middle class, and gush about CA politics being inclusive and such and democrat run, how can you rationalize in your mind with so many poor/middle class leaving CA that the dems are doing a good job there? Doesn't sound like the dems are making the state a very poor/middle class friendly places. Seems their policies favor the rich as they are the one's sticking around. Seems the fact that people/families are attracted to places like the Phoenix metro shows our politics are doing a better job at giving a decent standard of living your friends the dems are suppose to do yet can't in your CA paradise.

What gives?

You are missing the point, and are cherrypicking. Plain and simple, California is expensive because a ton of people want to live there, but there is less housing than there is demand for it. It is the same as inflation, more $ chasing fewer goods. And I already said, people who leave California are usually "settling" when they move to Phoenix or Las Vegas or Texas. I know alot of people from California who complain about AZ every chance they get. A big house and an expensive car aren't the answer to all of lifes problems like a lot of these ex-pats think at first.

Politics has nothing to do with it, as you like to point out, it is more demand than supply plain and simple
