KoryO's point is well taken. There are actually more horse properties in certain established neighborhoods than in new developments like Desert Ridge. There are places along 15th Avenue in North Central Phoenix, as well as side streets off 16th St., that are still large enough to legally accommodate domestic animals. The zoning to allow keeping horses, chickens, goats, etc. is grandfathered into the deed as long as the land is not subdivided. The point about sturdier construction is also a good one.

I actually had a friend who owned chickens living nearby. They got eaten by coyotes so it may not be such a good idea. She lived on county island land. County island land is unincorporated land in the North Phoenix/Cave Creek/Desert Hills areas. You might be able to get a small, old house, on unincorporated land for a low price. Hey, it might not be the greatest house, but the neighborhood will be safe and meet your other requirements.

Desert Ridge=no livestock. Few large lots and the ones you do find you will pay dearly for. I also am not sure of the price range, but I would strongly suspicion it is well north of the $200K range unless you go condo. There are some non-HOA homes where my sister lives around 52nd & Greenway and just south and west of there, however, still no chickens, smaller lots, and it will not come cheap.

PS I am from Ohio (Cleveland). I didnt own a single chicken.
