I really can't see how JC Penny, Kohls and Sears can remain open for much longer. Those stores lack a focus and most of their items can be purchased a routine department stores like Target. I can see Macys surviving if they go back to being a luxury retailer that it once was in the 1980's and earlier. There was a time when Macys and Bloomingdales were rivals and then Macys became pedestrian in favor of expansion. Macys needs to carry less items but more exclusive brands. I think reducing the number of stores was wise.

Sears should have gotten rid of their clothing and household items and focused on large appliances and yard/lawn/outdoor appliances. They should have gone back to their model having their own Sears technicans and installers instead of outsourcing to disreputable third party dealers for those jobs.

Arrowhead used to be an average mall comparable to Fiesta Mall in Mesa 15 years ago. But because of it's strategic location and the failure of the others malls in the area to develop (remember Prasada), Arrowhead has evolved into one of the finest malls in the Valley. It's impressive what they've done there. I really hope Prasada ultimately becomes a reality as well as Estrella Falls.

JCPenney has made an interesting turnaround and seems to be doing fine. While Kohl's missed their sales estimate this year, they seem to be okay. However, Sears is the one who is in real trouble.

I really wonder how would a Belk do in Arizona. Belk is in an interesting position in the market, slotting above JCPenney and Kohl's but below Macy's. I have bought IZOD shirts from them on their website twice so far.

JC Penny started selling appliances and I wonder if that helped them. People are always looking for alternatives to the big box stores (Best Buy, Home Depot, Lowes) for appliances. Kohls has struggled. Belk would not succeed here. Places where Belk succeeds don't face a lot of competition. Arizona has a lot of competition for those type of stores.
