Tempe mayor wants to connect new Streetcar system to Chicago Cubs ballpark in Mesa

Tempe Mayor Mark Mitchell said at a recent forum hosted by the Valley Partnership commercial real estate group he would like to see the Streetcar extended to the Chicago Cubs spring training home in Mesa.

The Cubs’ Sloan Park is located off Rio Salado Parkway just west of Loop 101 and near the Mesa-Tempe line.

Mesa Mayor John Giles and other city officials are open to the idea but also note there hasn’t been any funding identified for a possible extension.

I agree that this should be done, as well as to the Riverview Shopping Center. In the meantime, why not extend the Route 48 bus to Riverview?

Seems like vast majority of the Spring Training/Cactus League crowd stays in Scottsdale, not sure how this would be a giant benefit.

Maybe he's hoping that it will entice more people to stay in Tempe and use the streetcar to get to Sloan?

By moving them to Tempe instead of Scottsdale of course.

Getting the streetcar line underway would be a nice start.

Construction was supposed to begin in 2014 and be finished this year. Initial streetcar work begins Monday in Tempe - East Valley Tribune: East Valley Local News

You should know by now that practically anytime we're given start dates for groundbreaking, construction, and completion, they should be taken as estimates only. Most projects of this nature are delayed for different reasons. Look at the light rail: the initial line was passed by the voters in 2000, and was initially supposed to begin operation in 2006, but this didn't actually happen until the end of 2008. Same with the freeways: how many times have we been promised new freeways would be built & completed by a certain date, only to be either delayed or scrapped? Bottom line is: only believe it when you see it!

Problem is, I cant think of any hotels near the light rail in Tempe. Most people would have to drive to downtown Tempe, pay for Tempe's STUPID parking, then take the train? If there is no parking fees at the Cubs' stadium, I cant see the advantage of taking light rail.

There's lots of hotels in Tempe on or near the light rail line, and more in the planning stages.
