Google Fiber will lay off employees as it shifts to wireless

Most of the cities Access had hoped to bring fiber internet to are unlikely to receive it. Access is "pausing" nine cities in total: Los Angeles, Dallas, Tampa, Jacksonville, Portland, Phoenix, San Diego, San Jose, and Oklahoma City. Access says it may return to these cities in the future, once it's figured out a better way of deploying internet access.

The future of Access, to a large extent, seems to lie in wireless. Access purchased the internet provider Webpass in June, giving it the technology to begin deploying over-the-air gigabit internet to homes. In theory, it provides the same service that fiber would, but without as many deployment hurdles.

This is supposed to be a "pro-business state" that eliminates the red tape. Where were your local conservative politicians and Doug Ducey when it came to this. Where was the outcry? They were too busy supporting Donald Trump and worrying about social issues again.
Relax. Did you even read the blog linked in the OP?

Hopefully when 5g starts rolling out we will start seeing the end of wired cable access and the beginning of a totally wireless world.

Wireless is the way to go, laying cable lines is old school and disruptive.

Fiber-optic communication was new and innovative 30 years ago but it's going the way of the CD player now.

No surprise on the wireless angle. In about 4-6 years 5G should be available with crazy speeds:

I agree in principle, but wireless is also not as secure, and has more potential for hacks. Besides, I've seen some of these so called smart phones that can practically run & manage your entire life, but try using the phone feature & disruptions occur much more often than on the older styled flip phones. Seems like they allow you to do everything except make a basic phone call.

Yes in addition to the previous articles on this subject which you haven't read. It's clear the Cox lawsuit derailed this project. Negotiations were proceeding as planned. They likely would have already began construction in one of our cities which they would have been obligated to complete.

It's the way to go in terms of minimizing costs to the company but it is far slower, more unreliable and less secure for consumers. And the 5 G networks that some have touted do not expect to be realistically widely available for another 10 years.
