I lived in Noe Valley next to the Castro in S.F. for several years a long time ago. The Melrose area does not come close. No naked people in the streets and outrageous Halloween celebrations. I have noticed no people on the streets at all. I live in the Camelback East area now and have a transsexual living next door with a constant stream of generous gentleman callers all day long. It's interesting to watch the traffic come and go, so to speak. Some look like confused Mormon boys and others look like every day old geezers like me. I believe that Phoenix has a smattering of gay people everywhere. It's not uncommon to see gay couples in the supermarket and Costco. There is a heavier presence in historic districts and not so much in west Phoenix, and never in Maryvale. Some used to say, "San Francisco is my favorite city...where the women are strong and the men are pretty." Melrose is no gay ghetto.

This isn't San Francisco or Key West, and no one made such a claim. Districts like you would find in cities like those do not exist everywhere. The Melrose/7th Avenue area is where there is a high concentration of gay bars. When my gay friend visited a couple of months ago he had a great time in that area, even without naked people in the streets.

Default Gay area is now Fountain Hills

The newest gay area is Fountain Hills.
They have a popular gay deli, and a first gay bar being built soon.

Melrose is considered the gayborhood of Phoenix, but most of central Phoenix has a gay scene.

It's the same as any other deli. But the meat is sliced thicker.

What I found interesting living in the area for a few years was the targeted ads via billboards. The gay themed billboards started around Melrose (7th Ave & Indian School) and stretched over to 20th Street running between Indian School and McDowell. So even ad agencies knew what part of town to target if trying to reach the gay community.
