I don't know where the line is either, but this one is pretty clear

That's your story and you're sticking to it. If I believed that I would agree with your point of view. I don't. I have heard too many Native Americans says otherwise.

They are going to need to start forcing businesses in the Squaw Peak area to change their names as well.

That it also means vagina? I don't care anymore than I care about Dick Rd, which is to say not at all.

Given the majority of the people on this street/this area want the sign left alone, elected officials/the major should respect this view. And that should be the begin and end of this. I have a feeling the major/other elected officials of Phoenix can find much more productive use of their time in serving the needs of the citizens of Phoenix than play this kind of nonsense. Somehow these days more than a few of these "leaders" seem to want to tell the people of a city what they want vs listening and responding to what the majority of the people want on a given issue which is the way it should be. Just shows me this is just a self serving nonsense game.

I still call it Squaw Peak and the the 51 Squaw Peak Pkwy still, just like people still call "South Los Angeles" South Central

If Native-American nations across Arizona and/or America have a major problem with this, fine - change it. If not, leave the name as is.

If it's a problem sure, but the City should make it easy for those living along the road to change their deeds and whatnot.

Based on what I've been reading, it's a context matter.

Using the Word Squaw Respectfully

"The meaning of the word squaw is not the same for everyone. In general it is used to refer to a Native American female. However, the word has different connotations and invokes different emotions depending on who is using the term and who is hearing the term. "

I think a good analogy is calling a living entity a "bit**". Could be just the common term for a female dog which certainly isn't offensive/meant to be or used to describe a woman in a completely different way.

I think we are getting into a dangerous game when we start playing context word games/let's ban this word in many/all instances for everyone even though they can be used in a 100% non-offensive manner to the vast majority of sane/reasonable people vs the seemingly perpetually offended groups/a few out there.
