I'm thinking of relocating from Philly and would love to have a place that has a great neighborhood feel that has plenty of restaurants, bars (craft beer type, not dives ), an artsy feel etc. I'm looking for other free thinking liberals. I do love that vibe. I'm happily single, so not looking, but want a great social life. I'm a massage therapist and a nanny so anywhere that I can be gainfully employed is important obviously. Being close to RT 17 to head to Sedona and Jerome would be huge. Any tips?

Downtown Phoenix. There's a lot going on and all of the things that you asked for, including a burgeoning arts scene as well as all the traditional big-city art museums, symphony, concert halls/arenas, etc. Google Roosevelt Row, that's right up your alley. Also, Tempe (if you don't mind a college town) is also liberal.

ScottsdaleMark is spot on. The Roosevelt Row area has art galleries, funky record shops, really great restaurants, a lively gay(ish) bar, lots of places for good beer and is the center of our First Friday art walk.

I was told by a local Seattle friend who is thinking of relocating back to Arizona "I will probably live in Arcadia because that's the most progressive". Tempe would be another option and a place that I believe would fit what you're looking for.

^don't let this guy fool you. Tempe, toward the north side of town specifically, would be a great fit! Definitely a younger vibe, but sort of a hippy/artsy/college town feel.

The republican/democratic split in Maricopa county seems to be tighter then it has in a long time.

Funny how "Liberals" always talk about respecting other peoples beliefs, cultures and opinions, but how many posts on this place is for them looking to only be around each other! Funny I go out, eat, drink, shop, live and other peoples political beliefs don't even remotely have an effect on my life whatsoever, guess it's something only a Liberal understands. I would seriously like to understand this though.

If you only want to be around liberals and don't want to deal with conservatives you might pick a liberal state. California, Washington, Oregon would welcome you with open arms.

Overall I think Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Austin, Chicago, etc. would be your best bet if "free thinking liberals" is your main focus.

If you want to live in a metro that is comprised of people with many different views/a mix of viewpoints politically and beyond with an overall more independent leaning viewpoint and you are willing to find common ground in other ways with people, than I think any place in the Phoenix metro will fit that bill.
