The push is that a Tribe is willing to throw $500 million+ at a team, where as Phoenix, Tempe, Mesa, etc. is not. I agree with everything you stated, but teams see that carrot dangling right there in front of them (like the Coyotes and Glendale), it's simple economics. They see the immediate gratification of getting a brand new state of the art place to play in, using very little of their own money, but don't have the long term vision that the location might be horrible or less than ideal. It's simple as that.

Don't you think if the city of Phoenix told the Suns and Coyotes that they would spend $500 million (I know the city doesn't have that kind of money and they already agreed to renovate The Stick downtown) to build them a brand new shared arena on the Convention Center South site, they wouldn't jump at the chance? Sure both teams would probably want to be the primary/sole tenant, but beggars can't be choosers!

One of the biggest problems with this metro is lack of centralization. A shared arena with the Suns with some incentives between the teams and the city would be ideal, but Sarver and the DBacks are rapidly burning the public financing stadiums bridge with the City. A stadium near Talking Stick? I hate it but it would work. I bet it’d be everything westgate wanted to be and more.

In the alternative that patch near the 101/202 would work, but it would be a traffic problem just like the current situation is, unless we can get Tempe, SRR and Mesa to increase public transit to the area.

I have always been in favor of sports teams being downtown. Being from Detroit, they have all four of their teams downtown now and it has been a giant success. In a perfect world, the Suns and Coyotes should team up and share a downtown space. Staples Center in LA is a prime example of this.

That was the case until about 2003, the Suns and Coyotes shared what was then America West Arena (now Talking Stick Arena) downtown

Define "giant success". Pistons moved back when Dough Joe opened but remain near the bottom of NBA attendance.

The Pistons have always been pretty low in attendance. But three years ago, they were even lower.

Anyhow, if you know anything about the area, I was more referring to the benefit of the downtown businesses and downtown revitalization as a whole. With Phoenix trying to make a push to have a more thriving downtown, having sports teams in the area helps to a great degree.
