This is great news for the metro-Phoenix area...

"United Parcel Service Inc. on Thursday announced plans for a new package processing hub in Goodyear, Ariz., a rapidly growing commercial and residential community west of Phoenix.

When completed in late 2019, the new facility will have more than 970,000 square feet of advanced operational technologies and sorting equipment under roof and bring more than 1,500 jobs to the Goodyear area..."

The Central Phoenix hub on 31st Avenue south of Thomas must be having some capacity issues, since I believe that is the hub that currently serves the entire West Valley. The East Valley is split between two hubs - the Tempe hub serves Tempe, Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, Carefree, and parts of east Phoenix, while the Mesa hub serves Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert, Queen Creek, and probably Apache Junction and San Tan Valley. There is also the main Sky Harbor hub that all packages go through before being dispatched to the other hubs.

On second thoughts, I wonder what is the cause in the increase in UPS' package volume if that is the reason. Amazon actually seems to be using UPS less often nowadays than they were in the past in our area, relying more on Amazon Logistics and the USPS.

The company (NYSE: UPS) said the facility will help it expand its capability for Saturday ground delivery and pickup service that began last month in Mesa, Ariz., and starts this Saturday, June 3, in Phoenix.

The phased construction of the Goodyear, Ariz., hub modifies a 618,000 square foot structure on 140 acres in the PV303 Development. UPS said a portion of the building is expected to begin operating later this year in time for the busy holiday season to provide additional processing and efficient automated sorting capacity for lightweight small packages typical of e-commerce that are moving throughout Arizona and the Southwest.

Wow! This will be a huge shot in the arm for that area. I was wondering what that building was going to be... now I know!
