So, how many people do you think will need to be pulled of the various mountains and hiking trails during the next 4 day excessive heat warning? I don't know one could carry enough water to make such an attempt smart or safe.

I will say 10, a nice round number of 5 groups of 2 (trying to be nice) "silly" people each.

No matter how silly it is I just can't make comments predicting people possibly dying. Hopefully it's zero!

The key is to pre-hydrate and bring more water than you think you'll need. I would drink a 32 oz Gatorade/water mixture (50/50) before I would hike in extreme heat, have another in the car and bring 2 32 oz water bottles with me. But we're talking a hike of an hour or so, no more.

This may sound like common sense, but another good rule to follow about water is this: Only hike as far as half of your water. When you are about halfway through your water supply, turn around and head back.

And yet, here you are. Maybe some newbies or people coming to visit will see this thread and actually think about what's at stake and not do it.

Seriously though, sadly rescues (sometimes multiple) happen on a weekly basis. I thought it was absolute insanity that they had to pass regulations that people can't bring their dogs on the trails once it hit 100 but I guess there's ignorant and yes stupid people who did/will/do.

I wonder if that still holds when temps are in the "my feet are smoking" range. I know in the pool yesterday afternoon I drank a quart of water just exercising my arms/legs for 45 minutes...

You also have to take into account people's level of fitness. Some people shouldn't be partaking due to their age or fitness levels, but for those of us in shape the risk is minimal with proper precautions.

It seems to me it's becoming a "game" of sorts with those people who think they can just hike whenever they want to because the firemen and cops will rescue you if you get in trouble. And even if it's life threatening, these people don't care. They get on TV and are reported as "rescued" not as idiots.

I dont get this obsession with hiking when the temps are over 100 degrees....

I know they will never ban people from walking through public areas at any time, temp, or whatever, but come on, unless you are in top notch, "training" type of condition, you should be fined/jailed/ or neutered if first res ponders have to rescue you in those kinds of temperatures..

if you have all this energy that you feel you must burn off, go work at a homeless shelter, volunteer at habitat for humanity, or do something else, but putting first res-ponders at risk, to save your ignorant, thoughtless self needs to have some sort of consequences

You CAN hike this time of year, at 5 or 6 AM. I wouldn't go out any later than that
