Scottsdale's got a good mix of urban and suburban with all the variety anyone could want. I was referring to places like Surprise, Buckeye, Anthem, etc., hence the reference of the area being a "sprawling suburb that keeps expanding into the abyss".

I think what really hurt the Phoenix area's chances was the inadequate mass transit. Most routes are concentrated in south/central Phoenix, Tempe, and western/central Mesa, while most of the high-paying tech jobs are in Tempe, Scottsdale, and Chandler. With the exception of Tempe, much of these areas where these tech jobs are concentrated are in areas where mass transit is less concentrated.

No city in Arizona made Amazon's list of top 20 finalists. This should surprise nobody. The reasons are obvious. The only city west of the Rockies on their list is Los Angeles, but will soon be eliminated since it's in the same time zone as Seattle. Amazon will probably go to Chicago or the East Coast.

Lots of factors hurt Arizona. Bad education. Sherrif Joe. SB1070. Racism. Backwards. Same time zone as Seattle. Meager transportation. It was obvious why AZ got rejected so quickly.

First off, its "sheriff". Secondly, Joe is gone and everyone knows this. Racism? It exists everywhere. That sad problem is not unique to PHX in any way. Besides, PHX is one of the most integrated cities in the USA!

Plus, we are technically not in the same time zone as Seattle, since we are in the Mountain Time Zone while Seattle is in the Pacific Time Zone. We just don't switch to Mountain Daylight Time in March.

Phoenix was never under serious consideration in the first place, but it is worth noting the damage that SB1070 and Jan Brewer did to our reputation - especially among the tech companies. I recall attending conferences before that all happened and everyone was "wow, Arizona is a place on the move". After SB1070 everyone was "how can you live in such a racist place". We have a decent governor now who has the nutballs under control, but it may be a long time before we cease being Mississippi West and earn back our up and comer status.

Amazon doesn't want to go to place that's called the Mississippi of the West. The reasons are many and obvious why Jeff Bezos skipped past AZ. It was probably the first place eliminated.

Amazon has no problem selling Henry Ford's books, and I would bet you could get an EBook of My Struggle, too.

Surely it’s easy to decipher the difference between selling a book and investing in a second HQ?
