My mom's last house was like this. A lot of the neighborhood residents fixed up the back yards and it was quite nice.

Depends on your lifestyle, if you entertain a lot and want outdoor living, and/or have dogs or children who want to run and use the backyard then I'd say that is an important factor in your decision making - lots of the older homes have nice size lots, newer ones too if they're built on a premium size lot. We just bought a patio home for an investment and it's a corner lot inside a neighborhood street so quiet street - but we benefit from having a larger yard space with no shared walls. If you're shopping for a home and that's what you seem to be finding "shared space" keep looking / don't compromise - there are plenty of homes that will fit your needs!
