I think there have been a couple discussions about this but not a lot of detail or conclusions so I thought I'd bring up again. My wife and I are considering moving back to AZ in the next couple years. We are 40's, no kids. Our ideal plan is to spend 6-8 months per year in AZ and the rest somewhere else/traveling/etc. Could potentially get jobs with health insurance but for this I'm assuming we wouldn't. Last I knew Maricopa County only had 1 ACA provider and opinions were very mixed. In my research I have found a few Blue Cross plans in other states that offer some version of out of state coverage but not very common. Just curious how other snowbirds/part-time residents handle their situation and what options may currently exist. I know it's all speculation as things will probably change several times before we actually move anywhere but trying to at least put together a general plan and rough budget estimates. We are years away from Medicare and would manage our taxable income to keep it fairly low for subsidy purposes but above medicare threshold. Thanks.

If you're purchasing thru the healthcare exchange, you'd enroll at year-end for the state you'd be in for January. When you move later in the year, that would be a qualifying event and you'd enroll in coverage in the new state and drop the old state/pick up the new state. Or that's how I understand it, anyway. The marketplace plans here don't have out of state coverage other than emergencies (or mine doesn't anyway). The only exchange provider is Ambetter.
