Sams demographic model is to focus on people earning 75-125K annually. They claim this is a different demographic than Walmart. I was looking into their announcement today and it appears that some of these stores are being converted into e-commerce distribution centers. The overall goal seems to position Walmart to better compete with Amazon in both retail in online space.

That was my first thought as well, all of the Sam's Club patrons will now crowd the Costco. The Sam's Club in Chandler is sandwiched between 2 Costco's on the Santan Freeway. Not that I do the shopping but I still want my wife to shop there

No Costco in Flagstaff and, guess what, Sam's Club there isn't getting closed.
Same thing in my area. I live 20 miles from the Utah border in Western Colorado, about a 6 hour drive from Flag-town. No Costco--believe it or not they have a "smallish" Costco between Eagle and Vail.

I've never had any desire to join Costco as I DO make monthly trips to Denver. Perhaps I should look into them!

You’re really missing out. I could spend half a day between the electronics and booze departments.

Are Sam’s Club customers the same as The People Of Walmart? God, I hope not.

Agreed, Walmart didn't spend $3 Billion on Jet.com for nothing, they wanted Marc Lore to take their e-commerce from nothing and make it something!

Time for Trump to make Amazon charge a sales tax on its third party vendor sales.

I was right over there last night and wondered why it was dead. That explains it!

The Casa Grande store and the Chandler store were built for development that never happened. In Casa Grande's case, many of the retailers in the shopping center across the street closed (Target, Best Buy, etc.).

The Scottsdale store just never seemed to do much business in comparison to Costco. It was always dead (moreso than other Sam's Clubs I've been to). I believe the Scottsdale Costco is one of the most profitable stores in the entire chain and is constantly packed. It also seems to have more unique items than other Costcos (whereas the Sam's was a pretty run of the mill Sam's).

I'm not sure if there are more Sam's closings in the pipeline but I would expect a number of Walmart Supercenters and Neighborhood Market stores to close in the coming years. Walmart wants to prune its store fleet across all divisions.

Costco must be killing them..
I looked at the Northern Illinois closings.

One, Matteson, was next to a closed Walmart in a depressed area (where the mall across the street had been recently demolished).

As far as the others, it appeared that Sam's had a store in almost every town in the Western suburbs. The closures now will lead them to have one in every other town. This is the same as the arrangement of Costco stores in the area (which seem to be in an every other town setup).
