Even a single person earning what could be considered a low to middle income could usually afford something better than Maryvale. A studio apartment in a nicer part of Phoenix can still be rented for as little as $800 per month, and would be accessible to better dining & shopping options. Maryvale (and much of west Phoenix for that matter) has nothing to offer except sketchiness and blandness.
