If I purchase a car from a Phoenix dealership to register where I live in Nevada, would the dealership collect sales tax at the time of purchase and transfer it to NV or would I just pay the sales tax when I go register it in NV?

You pay sales tax in AZ - thank you for your contribution to our economy!

I'm also pretty sure you have to license your car at the time of purchase in AZ and then get new plates in NV.

I live in AZ now, but at one time I moved to LV and did the same thing.
Purchased a car in AZ in October and moved to LV in December and had to re-register my car.
I didn't get any money back from AZ. That was 7 years ago, I don't imagine things have changed since then.

Actually...if you are a legal resident of NV and you intend to register it in NV (not AZ), the dealership should apply NV sales tax, give you a Temp AZ tag that allows you to drive it to NV and register the car there. Some dealerships are able to actually set up the NV registration...I think that depends on if they have a partner dealership in the state you are registering it in.

Regardless, your dealership financing/registration dept should be able to guide you on this.

I guess what hurt me is that I had that 2 month gap.

You should have had unused AZ registration that you COULD have applied for with the AZ MVD and they would have sent you a check. I think 7 years is too long but you may be able to still check with them.

Good idea...check AZ’s unclaimed funds.
