We are very excited about our upcoming move to the area of Goodyear Arizona. However, I am concerned about possible noise from the Airforce base. We currently live off a major highway and listen to the constant noise in addition to an occasional train whistle in the middle of the night from the local rails. Can we look forward to a goodnights sleep in Goodyear or are we trading one irritation for another?
Also is Goodyear as beautiful as it seems? We can hardly wait to move from the boring corn fields of Iowa to the palm trees and warm evening walks in Arizona.

One of the reasons we chose Anthem over Verrado was to avoid the airplane noise from Luke (and my father retired from the AF after 22 years, so I grew up around aircraft noise all my life--we often referred to it as 'the sound of freedom'). In case you weren't aware, it's an F-16 training base.

From Wikipedia:

Luke Air Force Base (IATA: LUF, ICAO: KLUF, FAA LID: LUF) is a United States Air Force base located seven miles (11 km) west of the central business district of Glendale, in Maricopa County, Arizona, United States.[2] It is also about 15 miles west of Phoenix, Arizona. Luke AFB is a major training base of the Air Education and Training Command, training pilots in the F-16 Fighting Falcon. Since 1998, there have been 17 crashes with the most recent being that on March 10, 2008 when the F-16 jet piloted by David J. Mitchell crashed. The pilot was able to eject, but was found dead lying by his parachute when personnel arrived hours later.

From another quick Google:

Luke AFB, on the western outskirts of Phoenix, provides a locus for USAF F-16 training. Eight flying squadrons of AETC’s 56th Fighter Wing here are dedicated to F-16 training. Coursework spans the range from instructing pilots new to the F-16 to honing the skills of more experienced pilots in the latest systems incorporated into the Fighting Falcon. The 310th Fighter Squadron, for example, specializes in training pilots in LANTIRN and night vision goggle systems. The eight squadrons combined with the 944th Fighter Wing of the Air Force Reserve also make Luke the largest F-16 base in the world. More than 200 Fighting Falcons at the base fly about 180 sorties every day. Rarely does a minute go by when several F-16s are not tearing through the air overhead.

As for Iowa, I grew up right next door, in Nebraska. Went to school in Bellevue (my pops was stationed at Offutt) and did my undergrad in Lincoln--GO BIG RED!

I officially live in the flight path of Luke. I've only heard the planes during the day, never at night.

We are in Palm Valley phase 5 which backs up to their "area." We do hear the jets and they do take off frequently, but mostly during the day. I don't think I've ever heard them on weekends or holidays. It doesn't bother us. If you like to sit on your pation M-F during the day, it would definately be noticable. We love Goodyear and it is as nice as it appears. There are also areas of Goodyear where I don't think the jet noise would be heard.

In Estrella (far south part of Goodyear) we hear F-16s sometimes during the day. They are high in the sky by the time they go over us, but still loud. Like the others, I rarely hear them at night. We get an occasional jet from Goodyear airport, but that is not common.
