T2 was nostalgic and reminded me of a smaller Phoenix of years past, but it was also pretty run down compared to T4. I don’t remember the last time I was in any other terminal except 4. It could have been repurposed to accommodate regional jets and charter planes, but it was already doing that.

So now Sky Harbor has two terminals named 3 and 4? Seems legit.

I don't share the nostalgia for Terminal 2. For me, it represents a time when Phoenix had more limited air service to fewer destinations and not as many of the amenities travelers expect today. Besides, it was oddly designed. Despite being essentially a long corridor, there were places where it was unclear whether to go up or down to reach certain gates.

I am glad, however, to hear that the mural is being relocated to the rental car center. It will have far more exposure there than it ever did in Terminal 2.

Terminal 3 was recently named for John McCain, and Terminal 4 has always had a second name in honor of Barry Goldwater. It it becomes too weird to refer to terminals 3 and 4 in the absence of 1 and 2, they could just be referred to as the McCain Terminal and the Goldwater Terminal.

Everyone should keep in mind that termank 3 and 4 are both being expanded and he space left from 2 is being reserved for potential future international terminal

I don't think it was ever stated that the new terminal would be for international use. It is simply an expansion terminal that would be built if there is ever a need for more capacity. I highly doubt American would split its operation between two terminals, since from what I understand the new terminal is supposed to be about the size of Terminal 3.

3) It would have made a lot more sense to change Terminal 2 to accommodate regional airlines and/or general aviation.

Sky Train is getting expanded to the rental car station that will run through the area. They will add a station at the West Economy lot I believe but there will be room to create new terminals on the west side after the sky train expansion. The land is "reserved" for a new terminal.
Terminal 2 should have either been demolished years ago, OR kept in place, renovated and used as a different type of facility other than passenger airlines. Magnum Mike is right: spending all that money to renovate T2 and then demolish it just a short time later is a huge waste of time & money. Either way, the terminal is outdated, and is essentially the last memory of Sky Harbor when it was a much smaller airport.

Now, the big question is: once it's demolished, how long will the land sit as a vacant scar before something is put in its place?! I have to wonder this because of so many other structures in the past which were torn down, and the land sat vacant for years before something was done with it. There is absolutely no legitimate reason to not develop the land immediately after it's cleared, especially in the good economy we're currently in.

There is no concrete plan to build a new terminal at all, it’s reserved for future demand

Exactly, we are probably going to see empty land where Terminal 2 was for a while. The reason that would warrant building a whole new terminal is a tremendous increase in both domestic and international travel at Sky Harbor.

With the exception of British Airways' direct flights to and from London, right now if you wanted to travel from Sky Harbor to Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa and South America, you'd have to fly out of Phoenix to either Los Angeles' LAX, New York's JFK, or other major hubs in the United States, like Dallas' DFW, Miami, or Atlanta's Hartsfield, then fly to the international destination of your choice from those hubs, it's also the same for international travelers coming into Phoenix.

At one time Lufthansa was operating direct flights to and from Frankfurt out of Terminal 4, I'm not sure when they stopped. The problem is, Phoenix has always been a seasonal destination for vacationers, domestic and international in the cooler months, but if we manage to attract more travelers from all over the world, for both business and leisure, and all year long, then I could see a reason to build a new terminal that would span the areas of Terminal 2, and where terminal 1 was.

Will Phoenix's Sky Harbor become a major domestic and international hub like Los Angeles' LAX? Maybe, but not in our life time.
