Hello,

Never made the trip before and mapquest says to go through Salt Lake City from Boise to Phoenix. Google says to go through Las Vegas from Boise to Phoenix. Has anyone made this trip and able to tell me which is the best/fastest route?

Will need a place to stay along the way as well as available gas so with all these things in mind which route would your recommend?

Thanks a million.

I moved up to Boise eighteen months ago from Phoenix and so far have made the drive 3 times. Here is the absolute fastest way to get from Phoenix to Boise. Go to Las Vegas via Wickenburg on Hwy 93 (if you are in a moving van you may have to detour through Laughlin so add another 60-90 minutes to the drive). Continue through Las Vegas and just east of LV hit Hwy 93 again and go north. Just continue on Hwy 93 until you hit Twin Falls Idaho, go west on I-84 and continue to Boise. Be warned that Hwy 93 through Nevada is very desolate and the towns are few and far between. But the road is in very good shape and at least with Verizon I had cell phone coverage for over 90% of the drive.

With a moving van I did the drive in about 16-17 hours starting from the Metrocenter area of Phoenix, in a car I did it in 12 1/2 hours (there is not much in Nevada and I set the cruise control for 90 MPH).

Any specific questions you can PM me.

Thanks for the reply...

My trip will be starting in Lewiston, ID (5 hours north of Boise) so I will need someplace to sleep (Hotel) about 5-7 hours out of Boise. I'm concerned about this route being limited on lodging choices as there doesn't seem to be much once you get past I-80.

For lodging I would try Ely NV, seems to be the hub of tourism/lodging in northeast/central Nevada and is about 5-6 hours from Boise.

Hwy 93 is the main truck route from Las Vegas to Boise and is well maintained and as long as you stop every time you see a gas station you will be fine. The only issue that I have had in this drive is the stretch from Wells to Twin Falls right around twilight. Seemed like every 5 minutes I had elk/deer/antelope/cows and horses running across the road in front of my car.

I just drove from Boise, ID to Phoenix. The only problem area was SLC at night. HORRIBLE drivers. Too fast, too brazen, amidst intense freeway construction with 6 lanes going on for miles. It went from north of SLC to south of Provo - about 30 miles. I was very surprised, and will never do it again.

I was later told that it's been like that (the intense construction in the SLC area) since the Olympics money poured in.

+1 on the Vegas/93 route...I made the trip twice over the winter (January) On the way down I went through salt lake and in southern Utah hit the 89 and went down through Flagstaff (this route was about 70 miles shorter than through vegas and up the 15 through Salt Lake...Although the snow on the 89 was aweful...On the way back i went up through vegas and up the 15 through salt lake...Both trips took about 15 hours on the nose...Even though vegas was farther than up the 89 roads were much better.

A separate time I went up the 93 like mentioned from Vegas and it shaved like 2 hours off my trip..Road was not bad either
