I would have thought he had the best national reputation of pretty much anyone at the Arizona Republic.

Why would a national reputation matter when the Arizona Republic is not a national newspaper?

Now get Montini and the others out.

No one at The Arizona Republic has a national reputation, at least not since The Arizona Project days. A career spanning decades at a paper with minimal circulation speaks wonders to national reputation. That said, The Republic is dead. It's just another in a long line of papers resorting to poorly edited clickbait articles. I've watched the exact thing happen to the Detroit papers.

Tenured writers and cartoonists will be passed over for kids fresh out of college who will write tabloid grade articles without batting an eye. Journalism is dead.

The donation button on the third link says it all. Benson did some great work. The Republic is a dying animal. I guess all the pit bull breeders need the paper.

I am a news junkie, wrote for my college newspaper and the first job I ever had was delivering newspapers back in high school. The look, feel and way a newspaper smelled really resonated with me. But I haven't bought a newspaper in 5 years (a one off just to see what a current Republic looks like) or subscribed to the Republic in over 10 years.

It's a dying paper and guessing a cartoonist is an expensive employee to keep on the books. Probably cheaper to higher a freelancer.

Benson is obviously entitled to his opinion, but his opinions in his cartoons were obviously on the left side of the political spectrum. So between him, Montini, and others, the Republic didn’t exactly do themselves any favors by alienating a big portion of former/potential subscribers by moving further left over the last 10-15 years.

The last time Benson was funny and cutting edge enough to garner national attention was when Mecham was governor.

Do you really need me to explain to you that if you're good at what you do, you have respect on a brand scale, and to be broadly respected or admired is a good thing?

If you think it's a matter of indifference whether an Arizona product is crummy or excellent, if you think that Arizona doesn't deserve good news sources - well, I don't think everyone would agree with you.

Benson was a left wing hack. When I arrived in AZ in 1981 the Republic was an okay paper. I saw it drift leftward during the Clinton administration and that's when I cancelled my subscription. News delivery has changed with the internet and traditional newspapers would likely have started dying out regardless of content. But the lurch left by most newspapers across the country has expedited the process.
