I doubt they were F-4 Phantoms, there aren't any that are still flying in any of the US Military branches, I believe the last time they were flown by the US Military was in 2016 and that was in New Mexico. The few that are still in limited use are in a handful of foreign countries.

I wasn't there to see them, but I'll take a guess and say the ones you saw that are somewhat similar in fuselage configuration to the F-4 Phantom, were either the Northrop T-38 Talon (trainers), or the General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon.

That was my thought, too... to get a half-dozen flying Phantoms together at the same place and time would be a monumentally expensive task.

Check out the Scottsdale Airport Twitter feed. Sometimes they tell you what you just saw.

Thinking that says it all.

I would not want to land an F-4 at SDL, too narrow (75') and short (8200' without an arrestment system).

The Twitter (thank you, Fluffy) says they were USMC AV-8 Harriers. They even got a pic of them taking off over the FBO.

I have landed an F-16 at SDL a couple times, during the mid-late 90s, at the Scottsdale Air Fair. It was a free open house, and the public got a chance to look at and touch the hardware they were paying for. It was fun to fly in to the place where it all started for me a few years earlier when I got my private license. What was not fun: it was in late April, and it was somewhat hot, and a Navy EA-6B had flown in and as it was parked it sunk into the asphalt as the tarmac heated up and got too soft. I don't think they do the Air Fare anymore, especially post-9/11.

Looks like the last Scottsdale Air Fair was in 2012. Pity.

I knew for for sure it wasn't an F-16, nor the T-38 (wings were wider seeming), but the tail reminded me of an F-4.
I'm no pilot, clearly.

I see those little Navy trainer jets all the time at Scottsdale. Same goes for the Harriers and occasionally some F18. I have even seen Chinooks coming in and out of there, too. When Trump was in town they landed several V22 over there as well.

Why are these military planes coming in, aside from a VIP visit ?

Is there a base or military contractors in the area, vs PHX ?
