This is so infuriating, because I'll bet I could cut the number in half fairly quickly:

-Stop setting up traffic signals to allow cars to reach such high speeds
-Stop tinting car windows so darkly
-Have more traffic signals to allow people to cross
-Install better lighting
Although I'm sure some of the blame falls on our drivers, I'm putting most of the blame on pedestrians here. Not too difficult to keep yourself from being struck by a vehicle. Darwin would be proud.

I saw a PREGNANT woman jay walking at night, I saw a woman and her children doing it at well. This seems to happen to "particular" neighborhoods. Thomas and Indian School and I am sure others have the pedestrian crossing traffic light so why not just use it? Wearing dark clothes does not help either. The tmiddle lane is for vehicles turning, not people playing *******!!! We have big streets with pretty high speed limits for a big city and people of course go faster so just wait till the actual crosswalk.

I saw Scottsdale putting up some pedetrian bridges, forgot where it was. Can't do that everywhere, but at least it could be done at the super congested places around the Valley.

I can see it now: "HEY, I'M CARRYING A FLAG OVER HERE!"

Can't rep you more Fluffy.

People do drive crazy and aggressive AF over here. While I prefer this method of driving over Sacramento, it's still dangerous.

When you factor in how unwalkable Phoenix is and how few walk anywhere, the statistic is all the more disturbing.

Pedestrians wouldn't get hit as often if they'd cross at a light in the crosswalk instead of about 15 feet down from the crosswalk. Wearing black at night isn't such a hot idea either.

I think cops need to start giving out jaywalking tickets.

The article reads:
"Arizona's rate of pedestrian deaths had jumped to 1.61 per 100,000 people, making it No. 1 when accidents are viewed in relation to the state's population....... is nearly double the national average of 0.81 deaths per 100,000 people......."

So basically, if I cross where I should, pay attention while I am walking and use some common sense (don't wear dark colors at night), then I can slash my personal odds of dying as a pedestrian? That sounds about right.

Maybe natural selection is working in PHX.

I know I sound like a jerk, but this is of course what a California city would do. Cater to the lowest common denominator, bleed one's heart all over the issue and spend money on party favors. I picture the next step as being placing a kindergarten teacher at the intersection and everyone hold hands while crossing. All that said, distracted driving IS a significant problem.

I'm guessing you've never found yourself on foot, with the nearest traffic light four blocks away. If the goal is to save lives, then make it easier to cross.

Sorry, but I find it to be the opposite. I think it's "pedestrian beware." Hence, the accidents.
