Why can't we be #1 for something good for a change? Like the best SAT scores, or the most Pulitzers, or the best orchestra, or the most honest politicians?

This is so infuriating, because I'll bet I could cut the number in half fairly quickly:

-Stop setting up traffic signals to allow cars to reach such high speeds
-Stop tinting car windows so darkly
-Have more traffic signals to allow people to cross
-Install better lighting

Stop wearing dark clothing during the summer, and at night while walking.

The attitude of pedestrians here is different from other cities. It is a "driver beware" atmosphere. Unless pedestrians practice more caution and awareness of their surroundings, there will continue to be a disproportionate number of accidents.

Stop J walking and twittering or talking on cell phone, especially at night wearing dark clothes and not paying attention to what you're doing.

I lived off of 7th Street and the local homeless population would attempt to cross the street in rush hour while in some form of substance impairment. Our neighborhood message board would mourn the loss of one of the local homeless, then you find out later they were either drunk or high and decided that darting across the street in the dark was a good idea.

Used to walk up and down 7th Street to get to bars and restaurants all the time. As long as you stayed on the sidewalk and crossed with a light it was perfectly safe. It's not like the cars are leaping up over the curb to hit people.

Extremely sad Claim to Fame . . .

I am both a Pedestrian and a Driver plus a frequent Bicycle Rider . . . my personal opinion is there's room for improvement with all groups, however, over the years Pedestrians appear to have become much more disrespectful and downright defiant.

Sadly, Jay Walking . . . blatantly ignoring traffic signals and crossing in the middle of the block while totally ignoring crosswalks has become routine and commonplace.

Most outrageous . . . adults Jay Walking with young children. What kind of message are these "parents" sending the children in their lives?

Well, PHX could do what some Bay Area neighborhoods have done: Put a bunch of orange flags at each crosswalk so a pedestrian can carry one while crossing the street.

Because, you know, orange flags ward off speeding cars and careless drivers. It's an article of faith here.
