My experience with Phoenix so far is nothing but positive and complimentary.
I moved from a medium-size city in New Mexico, lots of crime, job prospects not too good, and not a whole lot to do. I think we all know the name of the city.
Phoenix has plenty of the bigger city issues like bad traffic and crime but I found only the traffic is worse than where I'm from, the crime rate is lower and you can't beat the good job offers at a pretty good pay rate.

Why is Phoenix such a popular retirement destination with so many negatives?
Because we still promote things like "beautiful sunny weather" and retirement as the reasons to move here, which was a ploy that worked well over 30 years ago, but not so much anymore. Many people from around the nation & the world who haven't been here will often think of Phoenix as nothing more than a smallish desert city where a lot of old people come to spending their last years. And the reason for that is how we portray ourselves.

Our winter is the same idea as your summers. One difference is that our snowload is a danger to a roof. It can be a serious risk, unless shoveled off (which is NOT fun).

You may or may not have a risk that we don't have?

Ah shucks, we're only the 6th largest city and the 11th largest metro area in the U.S. Hardly worth mentioning.

I for one spent a few summers in Phoenix and have also been in very cold below zero winter spots. My vote would be both sucks and there is no way in the world I would go through either again if I can in any way prevent it.

But the winter roads are dangerous. The Phoenix roads in summer are not.

Sonoran Desert summer has never prevented me from doing what I want to do. Midwest winter has thrown many wrenches at me.

I find as people age it becomes more difficult to tolerate cold as you lose muscle and fat under the skin. They find the heat not so bad they don't get bothered by it don't seem to build heat inside their bodies. Also the cold affects the joints the hot desert has always been known for place to retire to. If your retired from the mid-west giving up the yard work in summer humidity they look forward to. I prefer the cold myself find 45F perfect weather I stay here due to family and good employment maybe I will retire to the mid-west
