I live in the Ocotillo area of Chandler. If we did not have kids, and I had a job prospect in the Peoria area, I'd be taking the Peoria route for the same reasons. It's out of the way, less build up, more open space, etc. Probably more or less in the vicinity where Mike From Back East lives. Maybe slightly more north of Happy Valley Rd and east of Lake Pleasant Pkwy. If fact, we were originally looking to move to the area north of Happy Valley Rd between 101 and Lake Pleasant Pkwy (granted, most of that is Phoenix, but still). But alas, the job was elsewhere. There's lots of traffic and hustle and bustle here in Chandler. I'm not a fan of it, but it's far less hustle-n-bustle than where we're from in Silicon Valley. Also, more options for certain services for our kids and proximity to certain things we need.

I haven't look into the Northwest area for hiking, but Chandler has proximity to South Mountain. Obviously, tons of hiking there.

lots of hiking and outdoor opportunities here in the nw tip of Phoenix/North Peoria; plus, lake pleasant is only 20 minutes away, which is a BIG plus..
so many diverse areas in the valley, no one can say what is "the best"..having all these choices is a good thing, that's for sure..
