A friend of mine asked me how I did it when I came here. It got me thinking about the container movers. Has anyone here used a container service? If so, how was it?

I used u-pack which is similar to pods but was about half the cost. We were overall satisfied.

Once when moving one of my kids home we used ABM Upack - way cheaper as others have mentioned.

Recently on a local move for us though PODS was cheaper and gave us a great way to take our time on the packing etc. Rented it for a month, had them drop if at new place a week early so we had plenty of time on both ends.

I can only speak to my experience getting quotes, but PODS was BY FAR the most expensive moving solution. Even more expensive than a U-Haul truck, which if you have to rent one from the Bay Area to Phoenix, can run $3k easily.

Get quotes from all the players in the moving industry and compare.

I've done the U-Pack ReloCube, three times, AZ to PA (2007), PA to NC (2011), NC to AZ (2015), and had no issues. I don't have a ton of stuff so one cube was plenty. They drop it off, you pack it, put your own lock on it and call them to pick it up, if you haven't already scheduled a pickup. The price has definitely gone up over the years, but definitely cheaper than the PODS.

My last move, AZ to SC (2017), I decided to rent the smallest U-Haul truck and pull my car behind on a tow dolly. This setup was slightly cheaper than the U-Pack ReloCube, but the main reason I did it was to not have to put an extra 2,000+ miles on my car.

I would definitely recommend the U-Pack ReloCube!

I used ABF Trailers. You only pay for the space you use (5' minimum charge) and you don't have to worry about weight. They drop the trailer off and you have 3 days to load then when it arrives at your destination you have 3 days to unload. After you load your stuff there's a slot wall that you put up and you use your lock to lock it and keep the key. The rest is filled with ABF freight so no other household stuff will go in there. It cost me less than a POD or U-Pack cube and you don't have to guess how much weight you're putting in there. You can track it all the way and it's safe and secure.

My son used a cube from U-Haul to move from Austin to Nanuet, NY. When he went to the U-Haul location where it was being stored to get a few things (waiting to move into new home), he asked about air conditioning in the storage facility, which was supposedly part of the deal. The U-Haul guy responded "Air Conditioning? I wish". We will see what the condition of his stuff, which includes musical instruments and vinyl LPs, is when he has it delivered. Doesn't sound promising.
