This past weekend, I was at Superstition Springs Center, and to my surprise, JCPenney was packed while Macy's was mostly quiet. That particular Macy's even added the Backstage concept, but it doesn't look like it is bringing in much more foot traffic. This is quite surprising since I would normally expect Macy's to be the busier of the two stores.

I wonder, how do the two stores compare at the other local malls where they coexist (Arrowhead Towne Center and Paradise Valley Mall)? I heard Arrowhead is one of Macy's top stores.

I shop at Arrowhead fairly regularly. The Macys is more busy than the Pennys. Whenever I go, the Macys here is busy, although the Pennys seems to be doing a decent business.

In Colorado Springs, where I moved from, there was a lousy Macys, and its business level was poor, while the Macys closer to Denver was always busy. But the Pennys in Colorado Springs usually did a brisk business.

And the JC Penney store here in Tucson is affectionately known as the "Mexican Macy's". Tucson Mall stays in business in large part from Mexican visitors up here to go shopping. About the only traditional mall I've been to in the past few years that still is an attraction and hasn't been converted to a large strip mall.

Wow, that is crazy. I have not been in, or even recall seeing, a JC Penney in at least a decade. I thought they were gone the way of Kmart.
