This is starting to change for the better, but in many ways it's a little too late/too soon. A city that has basically been the size of Dallas or Philadelphia for over 20 years should have been striving to attract business professionals for at least that long. We continued to focus too much on things that worked 40+ years ago when we were a mid sized city, and we were held back & suffered the consequences for it. We still need to be more of a major corporate center, and not just a satellite office location.
Think we ever will attract major corporation. I know there is some tech and Data work but it’s often over hyped.

In this remote work world I’m not sure it matters anymore honestly. What we need is better ISPs and internet access as well as more direct flying routes to encourage white collared folks. That is the future.

Agreed. Phoenix has shot itself in the foot on the overlay of hi-tech jobs and some of the worst call center jobs one could imagine. Lack of international flights to places other than cartel war zones shows a lack of leadership. How many Phoenicians can name one of its sister cities?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think Arizona leadership decides on a private airline's international flight options. It seems to me that would be a supply and demand issue with the airline itself.

And I can't name a sister city, nor do I care. What benefit does that have?

What do you mean "ever" attract a major corporation? This is just a quick and easy Google search list of major corporations based here.

Avnet, Apollo Group, Best Western, Circle K, Fender, Discount Tire, U-Haul, LimeLight Networks, Petsmart, Freeport McMoran, Republic Services, Insight, Magellan Health (relocated HQ to Phoenix in 2014), Sprouts, ON Semiconductor, First Solar, Microchip Technologies, Carvana, Carlisle Companies (relocated HQ to Phoenix in 2016), Go Daddy, LifeLock, Knight-Swift Transportation, Taylor Morrison, Benchmark Electronics (relocated to Phoenix in 2017), Drive Time, Fulton Homes, JDA Software, Massage Envy, PF Changs, Mobile Mini, Kahala Brands (Cold Stone), Viad.

I don't spend much time in downtown Phx but when I've been there I've seen the millennials with their laptops in the trendy coffee shops. No different from what I saw in the Hillcrest districts of San Diego or along Irving street in San Francisco. Extreme AZ heat or not the cost of office space and housing is still very affordable compared with major cities in Cal.

Now, I seriously doubt we'll see a 3 bed 2 bath 1500 sq ft. home in East Mesa rent for $3000 or more anytime soon.

However we will likely see $1700-1800 by the end of 2021. Supply and demand. As rents in Phx, Tempe, Gilbert and Chandler continue to rise so will the nicer parts of Mesa.

Phoenix metro hosts six Fortune 500 headquarters. In comparison, St Louis has 9, Denver 10, Atlanta 15. Here a good visual. You need to really zoom in to see all of the individual dots.

That is cool, why compare to STL and ATL both are much older cities? It stands to reason they would have more Fortune 500s which tend to stay where they started. Atlanta is also much larger than Phoenix metro, as is Dallas and Houston. We should get to Denver's level but it's still quite a bit older than Phoenix.

Also in comparison and a bit more regional and SunBelt oriented, Salt Lake has 0, Las Vegas 4, Portland 1, KC 1, Austin 1, San Diego 2, Nashville 3, San Antonio 3, Tampa 3, Charlotte 4.

There was no rhyme or reason to my comparisons except to look for similar-sized populations. St Louis and Denver are each roughly 3 million, Phoenix is about 4 million, and Atlanta roughly 5 million.

Should there be a sunbelt handicap? I suppose. Maybe integrate the metro population over the past 50 years and use that to normailze? I don't know, haha!
