Ours is 12,500 gallons and we put in one bag of shock and this morning it read 3ppm chlorine. We're going to add more this evening - the algaecide we got said to get it to 5ppm of chlorine first.
You need to get you PH and total alkalinity balanced. You also need the right levels of stabilizer. All of this works together to keep chlorine in your pool.

check out this site. It may help.

Lucky you! I think my pool is around 30,000 gallons. I had absolutely zero chlorine this morning after dumping 10 bags of shock last night! The algae must just be eating it up? They used to sell this blue algaecide killer at Lowes that worked very well, but they don't carry it anymore. I added the algaecide this a.m. anyway, and I'll leave the pump running and maybe by tomorrow it will look better.

Also, and just as an FYI, I don't know if they do this in Phoenix, but they do flyovers in Scottsdale looking for green pools, just as an FYI...

Ooh... you've got a big 'un. Hopefully the algaecide will do its thing.

So, who does the flyovers and why are they looking for green pools? I'm just wondering, I've never heard of that.

Because green pools usually mean standing water which means mosquitoes and those can carry diseases.

Exactly, West Nile Virus. I actually even got one of those warnings from Vector Control at one point. I think they do the helicopter flyovers as a matter of routine.

At any rate, I had a good excuse for the shape of the pool, and did get it blue within a few days.
