Not in favor of housing projects. I don't know many who are.

Actually the "model" for buying up large blocks of apts., renewing and then re-selling (and destroying) renters credit ratings was done by none other than Trumps son-in-law, in New Joisey. You're not seeing the FOREST before the trees. Finding any rental UNDER a 1,000 (plus add on utilities) ANYWHERE in the western USA and Canada (and Tijuana) is a bargain. Walked through a lumber or plumbing/electrical and tool aisle lately??? In the credit crunch a decade ago repair materials didn't go DOWN in price; they went UP. I just started replacing my dad's thirty year old DeWalts and just about had a heart attack buying my new replacements. BLAMING is getting no one no where; it's the new reality that it's a landlords market everywhere except in a few mining and Mormon towns that have been dying for 150 years. Hydro just jumped 5%; if the building is including heat the landlord has to adjust that. Our long time friend in LA get 1,700 for a crap hole and we keep advising her to repair. there's no yard, the garage door doesn't go up, and the bathroom has no "fall" to the pipes. Now add on the new water meter, heat, and all other expenses. What happened (and our family did it) was buildings rents were not ramped up for years as the former owners had deep equity, and didn't want the drama of turnover, and maybe (like our family) were happy with long terem no issue tenants. You're also in a RED state. If those ae "California" or "Chinese" companies look behind the ownership. You're more likely to find Trumps' son-in-law.

Lower income people need to live somewhere, since being homeless is illegal

Like others said, might be time to look for a place in a less desirable area.
Actually, the story I presented was based on my research. I wanted to know more about the CA company that bought my current apartment complex so I checked on reviews.

Just 3 months ago, a reviewer shared her frustration over the $300 increase by this CA company. I believe it will be coming to my complex as well come this summer.

I give up.

This is the only post addressing the real issue. CA has been bought out by foreigners who jack the price, which causes (along with too high taxes) people to flee CA, where they end up jacking the prices in their new area. That could be AZ, WA, CO, ID, TX, etc.

There’s a problem, and no one wants to talk about it or admit it.

1) write your left-ish congressional representative and put in a ballot proposal to introduce rent control, or at least tie/limit rent increases to something like the the cost-of-living or inflation index. Then spend all your Saturdays standing in front of the grocery store or Walmart gathering signatures from registered voters.

2) build more houses and apartments. If it is a supply-n-demand problem, then zoning commissions and environmental impact boards are your enemy, align yourself with the Real Estate Developers - nuke, grade, and BUILD. Screw those endangered species, we need more housing, because population is increasing and people wanna move to the cool towns.

3) leave your town. find employment and make a life elsewhere, where the cost of living/housing is cheaper. It may be little ways away or it may be state lines away. Nothing is promised to you in life.
THIS regarding #3:

It's expensive everywhere. I looked at rural areas and far away places. Rents are spiking up everywhere you look, even an hour out of a metro area with respect to a long commute to work.

I will have to increase my skills. Find more paths for passive income. I work admin. They get paid on average well but not enough for these rents going through the roof.

Arizona for years was known as a place that was AFFORDABLE for MIDDLE AMERICA. Not anymore! It's slowly fading away.

Most of what this poster does is rant about how the little guy is getting screwed over by the evil greedy landlords. Her solution: have the government impose price caps, while claiming to not be against capitalism. Sorry, but government price caps are socialist, and about as anti capitalist as you can get.

What's really ironic is this same poster started a thread a few years ago (see link below) with similar complaints about the cost of living, and added more complaints about how bad Phoenix is because of the traffic, summer heat, etc. She even stated at that time that she moved to Albuquerque. Well, why is she back in Phoenix if she hated it so much here? Was Albuquerque also not what she expected? Did she fail there too? After reading her many complaints, I think this poster is just a chronic whiner who is unhappy no matter where she lives.

That's not true. I didn't want to come here. My first choice was Vegas. I was told it was AFFORDABLE here!

So take your trap and kiss it goodbye.

It is not typical of me. I don't expect cheap. I expect REASONABLE!! I was told it was reasonable here! CA is NOT REASONABLE!

I'm surprised with your ATTITUDE you don't live in CALIFORNIA! People like you would thrive there...

I hear this cold rumor going around that if you don't make in California, you end up here in second tier Arizona! Bitter much?

I think you're a very bitter person who gets off on attacking people! What does your reply say about you? *cough* *cough*

PS And this story is NOT ABOUT ME. I'm doing fine. I'm addressing the CA company that bought out my apartment complex. It is based upon a frustrated reviewer that I felt bad for. End of story.

You're projecting your own frustrations on to me. I'm good.

And many complaints? It's been quite a while since I last posted.

100% true. Just on my block alone at least 9 homes are owned by someone from China and they are rentals around three grand a month.

Do you have any idea how many present themselves as clean, moral etc.?

Complete slobs, strangers coming in and out for fun times (they could be criminals for all you know).

Every time you rent from someone, you have to COMPROMISE what you desire and SETTLE for what is.

You have to be very careful.

I find that people who OWN kind of act like miniature rulers. No thanks. I like being in charge of me.

I don't need somebody to lord over my life and tell me what to do or judge me whenever they feel like it because they own the place and I have to bite my tongue out of respect or else I'm on the street.

Some roommates were pretty cool. Not all are bad.

I read a thread somewhere recently where the poster was asking about a cheap house with acreage in Missouri, decent distance from basic shopping and medical care for <$250k. They were looking to leave an expensive area. I was curious and looked online at what was available and was shocked and how high the prices were. There really are no cheap areas anymore that offer what people want--jobs, decent commute, tolerable weather, access to shopping, medical care and schools. If it's cheap it's because it's a dying economic area or rural and has low taxes and low job availability. If it's cheap and has what is desirable then people are flocking there, raising rent and home prices and stressing infrastructures not meant for so many people. Then taxes are raised to accommodate more people and things aren't cheap anymore. Texas, Colorado and Arizona were first but now you're seeing this in states like Tennessee, Arkansas, and Missouri. With the internet and working from home being much more common this trend will only continue.
