San Diego born and raised here. I will say the valley has become a much much tougher place to live with how high the costs have gotten and it would make sense for a lot of people to start looking into other more affordable, prosperous markets. Those will be to our east though. You won't find San Diego to be a land of opportunity. People of near average incomes will struggle there even more than here. Even if you make great money, you'll pay a lot more in taxes all the way around for sure. The beach, weather and natural beauty are all world class but, it's certainly a hard place to live still.

Kind of like saying, I'm concerned about the crime in Gilbert so I'm moving to St. Louis.

No offense intended here at all or be an arsehole. I just don't see the charm that people have with So. Cal. San Diego is a nice place to visit. However, all in all, the region (southern Cal) is crammed with people and downright filthy dirty, and unkempt. And, the traffic is unGodly! To top it off the cost of living there is crazy stupid. Yeah, the weather is nice for most of the year perhaps but there is a price to be paid for it. As for the beaches, I'll take the Gulf Shores any day...

Hope the move works out for ya.

The gulf sucks. Polluted and no waves. Florida beaches are nice but too many rednecks there, the best beaches are also overcrowded. California has overcrowding because it's nice. The weather is the best in the world and a result of the cold pacific water, which I personally don't find too cold to swim in. The terrain is better than anything in the South or on the East coast. It's a great place to live if you have $$$ but not so much for the working class.

It's all polluted. Even my favorite rivers I used to swim in years ago when I was a little lad. But, that's a different story. I get your point about the redneck-hillbillys at the FLA beaches. Hell, they are right here in PHX too! The only reason I like the gulf is the white beaches and warm water. Everyone has their own perspective.

The white sands are nice. Clearwater was a nice place to visit when I was younger, before Scientology took over the city. I've been to every beach from Panama City, Ft Walton, Sanibel, Naples, Ft Myers, Miami, Daytona, etc and it's cool how the sand is different everywhere.

The gulf in general though, I find too warm. That also helps the bacteria grow which is why there's always flesh eating bacteria news in that area and not others. Gulf Shores AL and the Mississippi area look nice on the surface, but too many oil refineries nearby pollute the area, there's nothing in Louisiana, Galveston TX is trashy IMO. Go inland a couple blocks from the beach and the humidity and bugs hit you in the face like a truck. There's a reason it's so cheap there.

You make valid points really. I had forgotten about the "red tide" issues they have there. The only area I spent much time in was in the Clearwater/Treasure Island area and the west coast of FLA when I was younger--pre-Scientology.

San Diego's water supply essentially drought-proof up through 2045 and likely beyond, thanks to the amazing work by the San Diego County Water Authority. San Diego is a great place! You'll enjoy it!

Definitely agree that San Diego has a much more favorable climate, better beach/ocean access, and more to offer as far as theme parks & that sort of thing. I've said for a long time that if I could pick any city to live just for the weather alone, it would be San Diego. Problem is: San Diego is very expensive for the average person, and they have a lackluster job market. I'm baffled as to how you believe you'll get a better value on a home over there if you think prices here are becoming out of reach.

In the link below, you can see the population numbers for U.S. cities. Notice how San Diego had a growth rate of less than 9% between 2010 & 2020, but Phoenix's growth rate was over 18% during the same 10 year period (more than twice that of San Diego). Why do you think this is? Obviously, great weather, beaches, and theme parks are lower on the list for many people if they can't afford to live there!

I'd agree more with this if you were specifically referring to the L.A. area, but I have never encountered horrible traffic in or around San Diego, even during their summer tourist season. Phoenix's traffic is actually worse than San Diego's (at least in my experience). Also, I've only run into crowds around their beach areas, and occasionally downtown. Phoenix has a larger population than San Diego, and roughly the same population density, so I don't get the "crammed with people" issue. San Diego seems much less congested and more laid back than the L.A. area does.
