Where are you seeing anything illegal in there?

Can't anyone coming from Mexico or Central America claim to be a refugee? All they have to say is they are fleeing gang or cartel violence.

Where did I talk about illegality?

Which was my earlier point, missed by the other poster. Perhaps your phrasing is better.

Again, interesting thoughts but not on-topic. 'Refugee' is a legal status and therefore has nothing to do with "illegal border hopping".

But again, can't any "illegal" just claim refugee status?

Sure. There’s an application process to obtaining refugee status though.

Anyone can request asylum but it's really hard to get your case approved. You have to have a legitimate case and be able to prove you are in danger for your life if you are deported. A lot of false perceptions out there. Refugees who come here on a visa have been vetted and often waited over a decade or more in a refugee camp abroad before qualifying to come to the US.
