I'm headed to Tempe at the end of August for an annual conference. I always look forward to sampling the food options there, particularly along Mills Avenue. I was wondering what new restaurants there are along Mills Avenue, the conference is held close to the ASU campus, and what restaurants have closed since last year. I'm mostly looking for places within walking distance of Mills Avenue, but anything in Tempe is fair game.

What restaurants should I make a point of checking out?

Some high-profile closures during the past year:

Rula Bula
House of Tricks

Some new arrivals:

Terra Tempe (in tne Westin Hotel)
Alter Ego (in the Canopy Hotel)
Foch Cafe
Tacos Calafia

Downtown Tempe is in a sort of transitional phase right now. Mill Avenue probably experienced more closures during the worst of the pandemic than most other business districts because it relied heavily on student populations who were not on campus in their usual numbers. That means a lot of vacant space on Mill right now, but a lot of new restaurants are on the way. They're not assured to be open by late August, so check before going:

Anoche
Sake Haus
