I think if I move to Phoenix I'd live in Scottsdale (probably old town) or Downtown based on what I have read here. I am trying to figure out what the best place for me would be. I want to be around an educated, preferably liberal, young crowd, but definitely am past college. I am 26, but actually I get along better with people older than me. I was wondering what the comparison between scottsdale and downtown is?

I think downtown would be better by what you are saying. The way I've noticed is that downtown has more of a liberal/artsy feel where as scottsdale is more the flashy cars hot blondes fake boobs type as the night scene. I personally like both scenes so it could go either way for me, although I'd probably choose a downtown condo/loft due to a more urban nature.

There is way to many old people in scottsdale. Old women included. Stick to downtown, that way you're central.

Scottsdale tends to be the ultra-hip, latest clubs, restaurants, and stores, with people kind of "posing" and showing themselves off. Interesting, fun to take tourists to, but kind of fake in its own way. To me, downtown Phoenix is more interesting. There's a city vibe actually starting to appear there, it's busy during the day with working people, condos are going up attracting a younger crowd, and it's central to everything. I'd go with downtown.

The down side about downtown is that it's still has such a long way to go. It has made great progress but it really takes a person that passionate to help improve the area to live/play there.

I was just at The Roosevelt, an early 1900s brick house turned bar...great little place, but if you look out the window, directly across the street is a dirt lot growing weeds. A half drunk/high homeless looking guy was stumbling over himself on the street as well. You won't see things like this in Scottsdale.

This is something I've chatted about before. Instead of typing it out feeling again, I'll paste my last response to this question. I'm feeling lazy...

You actually have two options: Scottsdale or Phoenix. What kind of stuff are you into?
If you're looking for expensive clubs with all the bells and whistles, go to Scottsdale. Don't get me wrong, I go to Scottsdale quite frequently with my friends and have a great time, but it gets a bit pretentious at times. Think of it this way: When all those frat boys and sorority girls of ASU grow up they either stay in Tempe or they drive due North, and graduate to Scottsdale. On the upside of Scottsdale, it really is pretty and clean there.
If you're more of the cozy dive bar and artsy type, then head to Phoenix. Phoenix until about 5 years ago was 100% crap, but since then it's been breaking thru culturally, slowly but surely. It's a lot more laid back in Phoenix. There have been many weekends that I've been on the couch, not wanting to put forth the effort of beautifying myself to death, throw some mascara on and run out the door. There are a ton of bars and restaraunts that have taken on more of an artistic flair, and while the action isn't as consistent as Scottsdale, it's improving more and more all the time. I can't remember the last time I went downtown and came home with a feeling of "Well, that sucked."
I know it sounds like I'm putting Scottsdale down, but really I'm not. Scottsdale has a lot to offer... just depends on what you want to have offered to you I guess.

Almost every post about Scottsdale includes "fake boobs." It's very funny, I wonder what the percentage of fake boobs is exactly?? It must be pretty high. Well, and for face lifts ,too--must be very high.

Actually Scottsdale is one of America's fittest cities, where people work out and do outdoor activities more than anything else. Maybe you are just jealous of people who take care of themselves. Here's some info to digest about plastic surgery:

Top 10 'Vainest Cities,' according to Forbes:
1. Salt Lake City
2. San Francisco
3. San Diego
3. San Jose, CA
3. Miami
6. Louisville, KY
6. Nashville, TN
8. Virginia Beach
8. New York City
8. Los Angeles

Salt Lake City Is Nation's Most 'Vain' City

The women have to stay fit in order to physically support their enormous fake boobs.

Or, and the most likely reason, to avoid physical health problems and reduce the likelihood of breast cancer. Scottsdale/Phoenix doesn't rank high for breast enlargement procedures. Could it be that those few here who attack women's bodies have been turned down quite often and now are a little insecure?
