A 69-acre compound, replete with specialty retail shops beneath 200 loft-style apartments, a 14- to 16-screen movie theater, office condominiums and other amenities, is expected to go up near Surprise Stadium by January 2009.Moderator cut: copyright

Sounds great. Now all they need is to get a grocery store, dry cleaners, drug store, and other services for residents that is within walking distance.

That is the main problem I see with all the current dense developments in the Phoenix area. They have the bars, restaurants, and shops within walking distance but they don't provide the normal day-to-day services for the new residents in the apartments/condos/townhomes. The developments still seem to be catered to people in the burbs who drive in and drive out. If the residents also have to drive everywhere, it only adds to the traffic and kinda discounts the allure of living in the development.

Even Tempe doesn't have a decent grocer within walking distance of Mill Ave. That's crazy given the number of students in and around the ASU campus.

But, it's a good start.

Surprise is gonna be a gold mine. Im sorry when I was there 4 years ago that I didnt buy one of those homes that were 140.000 for a 1800 square foot home. I can kick myself now.
